Right now, in the villages of Upper Assam, families are standing on rooftops watching everything they own disappear underwater.

The Brahmaputra and its tributaries have breached their banks. Entire villages in districts like Nazira, Sivasagar, Dhemaji, and Lakhimpur are submerged. Over 7 lakh people have been displaced from their homes. Nearly 50 lives have already been lost — and rescue teams still can't reach tens of thousands of people trapped by the floodwaters.

Crops are destroyed. Roads and bridges are gone. Relief camps are overflowing, and families who had almost nothing to begin with now have even less — no dry place to sleep, no clean water to drink, no idea when they'll be able to go home.

This isn't a one-time disaster. Assam floods almost every single year, and every year, the same communities are pushed back into poverty just as they start to recover. But that doesn't mean this crisis matters any less right now.
