He Did Not Leave Them. He Was Left.

A stroke took the movement from his hand. His family took everything else. Today, a shelter home in Mumbai is all he has — and they need your help to keep caring for him.

Manoj was the kind of man who never asked for anything. He worked. He provided. He showed up — for his wife, for his children, for the family he spent decades building. He believed, the way most of us quietly believe, that when life went wrong, they would be there.

Then a stroke arrived. One morning, without warning, it took the movement from his right hand — the hand that had worked, built, carried, and given. Doctors stabilized him. Recovery began. And then, one by one, the people he had lived for began to disappear.

His wife did not stay. His children stopped calling. The home he had built went silent — and then it went away entirely. Today, Manoj lives in a single room at Riddhi Siddhi Vrudhashram, an old age home in Mira Road, Mumbai. The shelter took him in when there was nowhere else for him to go. They feed him. They ensure his medicines are taken. They provide the human presence that keeps a person anchored to life.

But shelters run on thin margins. Manoj has no family contributing to his care costs. He has no pension, no savings that remain, no one sending money at the end of the month. Everything — his room, his meals, his medication, his physiotherapy — depends on what the public is willing to give.

He wakes up every morning in that room without a voice calling his name. He manages his paralyzed hand quietly, without complaint. He smiles, when he smiles, with a gentleness that makes you wonder how a person arrives at peace through so much loss. He holds no bitterness toward the family that left. He holds only one open hand — and whatever hope he has left in it.

The shelter is there. The care is there. What is missing is the funding to sustain it. That is where you come in.

  • 🏠Shelter continuity — Monthly contribution toward his room and board at Riddhi Siddhi Vrudhashram. Without regular funding, his place at the home cannot be guaranteed.

  • 💊Daily medicines — Post-stroke medication is ongoing and non-negotiable. He has no one to pay for prescriptions. These must be covered month after month.

  • 🤲Physiotherapy — Continued therapy on his paralyzed hand gives him a chance at regaining partial function. Each session is a step toward independence he may never fully reach — but deserves to try.

  • 🍽️Nutritious meals — The shelter provides food, but nutritional support for stroke recovery requires more than basic rations. Donated funds allow proper diet to be maintained.

  • 🧡Dignified care — Clothing, hygiene supplies, and the small dignities that remind a person they are still worth caring for.
