On the morning of August 26, 2026, the mountains of north-central Nepal did something no one was prepared for. A glacier gave way high in Langtang National Park, sending a wall of mud, rock, and water tearing nearly a hundred kilometres down the valley. In minutes, it swallowed roads, swept away bridges that had stood for generations, and buried entire settlements in the Rasuwa district under metres of debris.

By the time the water settled, hundreds of people were confirmed dead. Thousands more were reported missing — mothers separated from children, elders unaccounted for, whole families simply gone from villages that no longer exist on the map the way they did a week ago. Homes that took decades to build were erased in seconds. Fields that fed families for generations turned to mud and stone.

And then it rained again. And again. With new glacial lakes forming upstream, threatening fresh flooding, the danger for survivors has not passed — it has only changed shape.

Somewhere in that devastation is a family we will never meet by name, but whose story is being repeated in village after village.

A mother wakes in a relief tent with her two children, listening for a river that used to be a gentle sound outside her kitchen window and is now the reason she has nothing left. A father searches the debris where his neighbour's house used to stand, because there is nowhere else to look.
